The world’s best restaurant is French … and the chef is from Argentina!
Mirazur, in the south of France, tops this year’s list of the World's 50 Best Restaurants. What makes this unusual is that the restaurant’s chef, Mauro Colagreco, is an Argentine who trained in La Rochelle after coming to France in 2001.
A restaurant in France’s Alpes Maritimes region leads this year’s ranking of the World's 50 Best Restaurants. This is the first time that the British publication has had a French restaurant at the top of its annual ranking. Located in Menton, very close to the Italian border, Mirazur has long had a solid reputation in France, earning three stars in the Michelin Guide (2019) and four toques in the Gault & Millau (2010), the country’s two leading restaurant guides.
What makes Mirazur different is that it is the only three-star restaurant in France whose chef is a foreigner! After arriving in France from Argentina in 2001 and training at a hotel school in La Rochelle, Colagreco worked with some of France’s leading chefs (Bernard Loiseau, Alain Passard, Alain Ducasse) before opening Mirazur in 2006.
Tributes to French cuisine and culinary arts
Just a few days back, the spotlight fell on French pastry-making, already world renowned, when the World's 50 Best Restaurants list accorded the honor of the world’s best pâtissier to Jessica Préalpato, pastry chef at Alain Ducasse’s Plaza Athénée in Paris.
