I received a very warm welcome when I arrived
We met Tan on October 25 2012, during the "Nuit des Etudiants du Monde" (World Students Celebration), an event organised by the City of Paris with the support of the CIUP and the CROUS of Paris.
He accepted to tell us about the Malaysia program that has been managed by Campus France for ten years, and of which he is a recipient, and about his three years of studies in France.
How does the program operate?
All Malay students want to go as part of this program; no need to say that competition is rather hard. I had the chance to be part of the students selected and join the 2-years training occurring before going to France, at the University of Kuala Lumpur.
I started my studies in France in 2009 at the IUT Sophia Antipolis in Nice. I received a very warm welcome when I arrived. Nothing was left to chance: we could rely completely on the program coordinator.
Where are you studying now?
Since the start of third academic year, I am registered in Polytech' Paris UPMC. This year marks a decisive turn: for the first time, I experiment autonomy. Even though I received great support from Campus France to find an accommodation at the CIUP (International University City of Paris, a student residence campus), I realized most of the administrative processes by myself... and I'm very proud of it! The CIUP is really the best place to stay. I particularly enjoy the mix of culture you can find in the Victor Lyon residence.
Why choose France?
I must admit that France was not my first choice, the USA were. But today, I haven't even the slightest regret. I think that the determining aspects are, among others, French learning, the quality of teaching, the richness of cultural life, the location in the heart of Europe, but also moderate registration fees.
Can you tell us in a few words something that surprised you during your stay in France?
At first I was surprised to see people touch each other or kiss in public. It's inconceivable in my country. Now, I am completely used to it!
