PAUSE Programme: a new call for applications opens

The Programme for the Emergency Reception of Scientists in Exile (PAUSE in French), has just opened a new call for applications for higher education and/or research institutions. The deadline for applications is 2 October 2020.

The PAUSE programme is a national programme providing incentive funding to public higher education institutions and public research organisations planning to host scientists in exile.

The PAUSE programme has just opened a new call for applications for higher education and/or research institutions. The deadline for applications from host higher education and/or research institutions is 2 October 2020.

Who is eligible?

Are eligible to apply for this programme: higher education and research institutions under the supervision of the French Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, and private higher education institutions of general interest (EESPIG in French), as well as certain institutions of the Ministry of Culture.

Subsidies granted as part of the programme aim at funding projects for the reception of foreign scientists from any geographic origin and for any scientific programme, regardless of the field.

What are the requirements?

Scientists who are interested and whose application is supported by an institution must prove, regardless of their current place of residence:

  • a teacher-researcher or researcher status or registration in a PhD course;
  • being in an emergency situation, i.e. “to be the victim of persecutions or violence because of the content of research, free speech, identity, beliefs, or sexual orientation”, or being the victim of another type of threat.

What funding?

The amount of funding allocated varies according to the status and experience of the beneficiary and the existence of a social support project by the host institution:

  • Category 1 (doctoral student, research assistant), up to 20,000 euros;
  • Category 2 (post-doctoral student, lecturer, research engineer), up to 40,000 euros;
  • Category 3 (university professor, research director), up to 60,000 euros.

The financial support received to host an applicant covers a maximum period of one year over the duration of the host project. It may be renewed once.

How to apply?

Applications are prepared and presented by the host institution. If an institution wants to volunteer to host a scientist at risk, but is not in direct contact with a researcher, the Collège de France entity can put the institution in touch with one of the researchers who has applied directly to the programme.
