PAUSE, The French Hosting program for Scientists and Artists in exile

Initiated by the French government with the support of civil society and economic players, the mission of PAUSE (Programme d'Aide en Urgence des Scientifiques et des Artistes en Exil - National program for the urgent aid and reception of scientists and artists in exile) is to accommodate and protect researchers and artists from countries in which the political situation places their work and their families in danger. 

The application process is open to public research organisations and public higher education institutions under the supervision of the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation and/or of the Ministry of Culture, as well as to general private interest higher education institutions (établissements d’enseignement supérieur privés d’intérêt général, EESPIG) which may submit an application form to accommodate a researcher within the scope of the PAUSE programme.

The French Hosting program for Scientists and Artists in exile (PAUSE) was officially launched was created in January 2017, following the signing of an agreement bvetween the Ministry of Higher Education and Research, the Collège de France and the Chancellery of the Universities of Paris. 

The aim of PAUSE is to promote the reception of foreign researchers, scientists, intellectuals and artists who find themselves in emergency situations in France. The intention is to enable them to continue their work and protect their families. 

 

Since its creation in 2017, the PAUSE programme has conducted 22 calls for applications, supporting 609 laureates including 547 researchers and 62 artists. These laureates come from 43 countries and are hosted in 129 institutions.

Support fund 

The PAUSE programme operates with the help of public funding but also thanks to public and private partnerships. A subscription fund has been opened up to the Fondation de France to provide financial support for the actions of the PAUSE programme. Donations can be made directly online.
