The power to attract: Program on French “capitals of culture” gets under way
At a recent meeting of the interministerial council on culture, France’s prime minister announced the launch of French Capitals of Culture, an initiative that will help French cities showcase their cultural and artistic innovations.
More broadly, the program will provide a framework within which participating localities can promote tourism by publicizing their artistic and cultural attractions. The program’s inaugural year will begin in September 2021.
A call for proposals to be issued in 2020 by the ministries of culture and foreign affairs will target towns and cities with a population of 20,000 to 200,000, making the initiative open to the entire nation.
Every two years, a new group of French cities will receive the “Capital of Culture” label in recognition of their artistic innovation and cultural appeal.
To be successful, candidates will have to meet several key criteria:
- Support for creativity and effective leveraging of the area’s cultural heritage,
- Artistic and cultural outreach, with local participation;
- Contribution to the economic dynamism of the locale.
