QS World university rankings by subject: 21 French institutions in the Top 100

The 13th edition of the QS World university rankings by subject has just been revealed, and France is in good position, with 21 institutions in the Top 100 of each major subject. The World university rankings by subject designed by Quacquarelli Symonds, British consulting firm specialised in higher education, has presented on 22 March its latest annual ranking listing institutions in 54 disciplines in the five greater fields of education.

To establish this ranking 2023, QS compared the performance of about 1.600 higher education institutions worldwide in 54 disciplines grouped in five major subjects (Arts and Humanities, Engineering and Technology, Life Science and Medicine, Natural Sciences, Social Sciences and Management) using five criteria (academic reputation, employer of young graduates reputation, research citation by paper, and International research network).

Strong French presence in all disciplines

Thanks to its high score in most of these criteria (in 27 disciplines out of 54), Sorbonne Université became the most frequently ranked French institution in this ranking.

Sorbonne Université is however just behind PSL Université, which appears in 24 disciplines. To be noted that three French institutions appear in the world top five by discipline: INSEAD (2nd position in Business and Management), the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris (2nd in Performing Arts) and Sciences Po (3rd in Politics and International Studies). Additionally, HEC is present in the Top 10 in Marketing and Business/Management, and Sorbonne Université, also in the Top 10 in Mathematics.

21 French institutions in the Top 100 in each subject

More French institutions are however present, and many times.

More precisely, in the Top 100 of each of the five main subjects, there no less than 21 French higher education institutions:

3 institutions in Arts and Humanities: Université Paris 1 Panthéon Sorbonne (17th), Sorbonne Université (19th), PSL Université (61th);
5 institutions in Engineering and Technology: Institut Polytechnique de Paris (21th), Université Paris Saclay (22th), PSL Université (41th), Sorbonne Université (64th), Grenoble INP (93th);
2 institutions in Life Science and Medicine: Sorbonne Université (43th), Université Paris Cité (70th);
6 institutions in Natural Science: Sorbonne Université (13th), PSL Université (14th), Université Paris Saclay (19th), Institut Polytechnique de Paris (26th), Université Grenoble Alpes (70th), Université Paris Cité (72th);
5 institutions in Social Science and Management: INSEAD (International school, 31th), HEC Paris (51th), Université Paris 1 Panthéon Sorbonne (59th), Sciences Po (74th), PSL Université (79th).
